There are several ways to become a member of Holdfast Model Aero Club (HMAC).
1. You haven’t flown a model before or flown without joining a club.
You can book a free Come and Try trial flight, but you must be at least 14 years of age. If you demonstrate potential, and wish to continue, we’ll invite you to join the Club as a trainee. An application form will be sent to you with advice regarding payment.
Once you are a trainee you don’t need to buy anything to start with. Our Club has 6 model aircraft, which we use for our training program, all with master & slave radios provided by our sponsor, Modelflight. You’ll be given the theory and gradually learn to fly the model with an instructor on the master radio. He’ll save the aircraft if you can’t! See “Learn to Fly” on the top menu bar.
You’ll also be given the following documents:
- • Club By-laws
- • Members’ Handbook
- • Learner’s Theory Guide
You will need to read and understand the contents of these documents upon becoming a member.
2. You are already qualified and a member of another club.
You can already fly but would like to join HMAC? Sure, welcome. We’ll need to see your MAAA licence is current and we’ll do a check flight with you so you understand the No Fly Zones and safety procedures at HMAC. If you’re not current, we’ll take you to Bronze Wings standard so you can fly at HMAC. Please contact the Club and we’ll get back to you to make a time.
3. You would like to be a social member.
Don’t want to fly, but have an interest in full size and/or model aircraft? You could join HMAC as a social member at very little cost and meet with our other social members. You can even help out with maintenance around the field! Send an email to and you’ll be advised how to join as a social member.
For further information, drop in to our field (corner Majors Rd & Lonsdale Rd, O’Halloran Hill) on a nice Sunday morning and chat to one of our instructors. If it’s not too busy you might even get to fly!
