When do I have to fill in an Incident Report?
1. Whenever your plane lands/crashes anywhere outside the red border, as shown on the map below, you must notify a Committee Member as soon as possible and submit an MAAA Incident Report.
2. If your plane lands/crashes inside the red border but outside the yellow border, you must notify a Committee Member within 24 hours of the incident. Depending on the circumstances, you will be asked to submit either a Club Incident Report or an MAAA Incident Report.
3. If the incident results in property damage (other than to the aircraft itself) or injury to anyone, you must submit an MAAA Incident Report regardless of where the incident occurred.
An easy way to notify the Committee is by leaving a voicemail on the HMAC phone number – (08) 8377 2708.
But there was no damage. It doesn’t matter. If the incident occurs outside our prescribed boundaries you must still notify the Committee as soon as possible following the incident. The only situation where an Incident report is not required is when the crash occurs inside the fence boundaries and there is no injury or property damage (other than to the aircraft itself).
What’s the point? Crashing onto our field happens to us all. But a crash outside our flying area is not a normal situation. You are crashing on someone else’s property and there could be legal consequences. We’d like to know what happened so that we can determine if there is a recurring pattern to some incidents and advise members on how to reduce the risk of future occurrences. For example, last winter 2 models disappeared in fog that formed much faster than anticipated. We now advise members to avoid flying if there’s any sign of fog in the area. Recently the rubber bands securing the wing on a large trainer failed. It’s therefore wise to check the state of elastic bands regularly and replace them if they show signs of deterioration.
Bottom line: A model that crashes on to the road and causes a motor car accident could lose us the field. If your plane crashes outside the designated flying area, we need to know why. It isn’t a blame game, it’s an exercise in risk assessment and management.
